I know that it technically wasn’t the authors choice and that’s just history but I couldn’t look past how angry I was at Wang Lung. Maybe someday l from now I’ll build up courage to read it again and figure out why the folks at Columbia thought so highly of it.

Buck 14 bhck May 31, This cannot be compared to ear piercing! Even when the most pexrl events were taking place, they were dismissed in a narrative of a few words.
It’s actually pretty horrifying. She died in Vermont. Pearl Buck’s The Good Earth. He deserved all the misery he got and much more. Celeste Ng has an article on the Huffington Post that really just states clearly how I feel about it.
They end up thinking, “This is how China IS,” not “This is a portrayal of how one part of China was at one point in time. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. And I hate how Buck slants this as if his circumstances are to blame rather than pealr, himself. I know, it doesn’t even seem possible, but after reading a novel that talked a lot about it, I decided to research it.

Stilted and jumping from one place to the other, the writing did not do the story any favours. It was written well, and gave a fantastic depiction of Chinese traditions and life on the farm I hated this book with a passion. I compare terfe depressing books that I read to The Good Earth. I would rerre recommend this book to anyone unless they wanted to know what an abusive relationship was.
I guess I’m just not a fan of reading books where all women are worthless fools and all men are ill tempered perverts.
Other books in the series. This book angered me in many ways, and also made me feel sad to be a woman. I really hope this book is not a good demonstration of the Chinese culture. Katie Yeah I think they were believable enough. For every instance of Wang Lung thinking buc, positive about his wife, there would be three incidents of him saying or doing something negative.
I read this in high school, pearrl I remember my teacher asking what we were going to do that weekend of the Friday we had finished the book. The decisions that are made throughout the book, the grasping, the envy trre the way ambition and a worthy goal in life turn on the main character and make him one to be despised and pitied is what makes you keep reading because there has to be more.
Wang LungO-lan. I enjoyed discussing it as well, but actually reading through it was torture. It hurt me to read such a misogynistic budk of view, I felt attacked by Wang Lung for just being a woman. The entire evil family was lazy, arrogant, greedy and violent.
I need to read that classic. No, the Confucian society described in hcinoise book was alive and real a long time ago, and in some parts of the world, still is. Do we read Anna Karenina and feel that we now know everything about Russia? Why do Paerl feel guilty writing this? The historical research was scanty and there were not many details weaved into the story. The entire book is written like an essay.
Incivil unrest in China forced Buck back to the United States.
I don’t have any good things to say about this book. The descriptions of his lustful feelings are pornographic in that they “arouse powerful emotions that must be expressed only in marriage” For the Strength of Youth, It all happened all over again!!! Read the reviews and you’ll see one word come up over and over again: Mind numbing rags to riches to rags then decadence before this epic bore fest became an exercise in pure tedium. I don’t think it’s just because I hated the main character so much, and in this case at least, I don’t think it’s because of the weirdness that arises from a Westerner writing about a colonized country.

It just felt like it was trying too hard to be too “Chinese,” and it felt like it was written mainly for a white audience that would be enamored by the hardworking ethics of the Chinese peasant, the inhumane exotic practices of foot-binding, and the oh-so-strange ideas of Confucius and filial piety and all that.
Having a splitting headache that gets worse and worse the more I read isn’t very fun for me. It just felt like it was trying too hard to be too “Chinese,” and it felt like it was written mainly for a white audience that would be enamored by the hardworking ethics of the Chinese peasant, the inhum I just tetre this book deeply problematic.
